K-Swiss

Public answered the call from MTV and K-Swiss in January 2008 to develop a microsite for a campaign with sportswear brand K-Swiss

background

The campaign focused on the K-Swiss Classic and was part of a global campaign to relaunch their classic trainer

Users of the site were asked to get creative by designing a 3D model of the K-Swiss Classic and entering it into a competition. The designs were submitted to a gallery, and the best three entries are put to a public vote. The overall winner received 5,000 Euros to spend on redesigning a space of their choice within their home. The competition was open in the UK, Germany and Holland and was advertised on the MTV website and on TV spots in the various regions.

what we did

The main content of the microsite – creating the design of your trainer – provided Public with a very serious development challenge. The model of the shoe was developed in Maya, exported into Flash and then rendered in Papervision. The tool allowed users to upload content onto the shoe, paint and stencil their own original designs, and add a selection of 3D elements. All of this was rendered into Papervision to apply the finished creation to the 3D shoe, which users could interact and play with.

Over the course of the month long campaign there were over 15,000 entries who all submitted a designed version of the K Swiss classic shoe for voting. It was an overwhelming response but given the quality of the 3D assets and the usability of the application it was a very low barrier to entering the competition and allowed users to easily express their creativity and enter the competition.
